Tile Types and Their Rules

Learn the main tile types, where pieces can move, and which spaces have special safety or interaction rules.

Yard

Each player has one Yard that matches their color: green, red, blue, or yellow. Your pieces start in your Yard, and captured pieces are sent back there.

Home

The triangle-shaped tiles in the center of the board. Each player has one Home that matches their Yard color.

Home is the final destination for your pieces. Once a piece reaches Home, it is safe and cannot move again.

In Journey, the goal is to move all of your pieces into Home.

Home Path

The Home path is the seven colored tiles that lead into a player’s Home. Each Home path matches that player’s Yard color and can only be used by that player’s pieces.

On the forward path, the Home path starts at tile 65. On the backward path, the Home path starts at tile 70.

A piece moving forward enters at the beginning of the Home path and travels across all seven tiles. A piece moving backward enters at the fourth tile and travels across only the final four tiles, creating a shorter route to Home.

A piece must pass its midpoint before it can enter its Home path.

Pieces cannot enter another player’s Home path.

Once a piece enters its Home path, it cannot move back onto the regular path. It can only move toward Home.

Castles

Castles are marked with a star or a circle.

Castles are safe spaces for all players and all pieces.

Piece interaction rules do not apply on Castles. Pieces cannot be captured or blockaded while on a Castle.

Any number of pieces may share a Castle, even pieces from different players.

Pieces may also pass through Castles, even if other pieces are already on them.

On the forward path, the Castles are tiles 8, 13, 25, 30, 42, 47, 59, and 64. On the backward path, the Castles are tiles 6, 11, 23, 28, 40, 45, 57, and 62.

Entering Tile

Your entering tile is tile 1 on your path. It is the first tile your pieces move onto when they leave your Yard.

Each player has their own entering tile, and special rules apply to that player’s pieces on it.

Your entering tile is safe for your pieces only. Opponents cannot capture your Guards or Noble while they are on your entering tile.

Your pieces cannot be blockaded by opponent pieces on your own entering tile.

Your Guards can capture any number of opponent pieces on your entering tile, regardless of group size. For example, one of your Guards can capture a group of four opponent Guards on your entering tile.

This rule also applies to opponent Nobles. A single moving Guard can capture an opponent Noble on your entering tile.

This capture rule only applies to Guards. Nobles still cannot capture under any circumstances.

This special capture occurs only when a Guard moves onto or passes over your entering tile. A Guard that begins its movement on your entering tile does not capture opponent pieces already there.

Your Noble can still be blockaded by your own Guards, even on your own entering tile.
