Scoring System
Learn how progression score, combat score, and bonuses combine into total score.
Total Score and Game Mode Weights
Your total score is your progression score plus your combat score plus any bonuses.
Journey rewards progression more heavily than combat. Brawl rewards combat more heavily than progression.
Combat score can fall below zero because of blockade penalties. Progression score and completion bonuses cannot fall below zero.
Journey completion bonuses are separate from progression score and combat score. Brawl does not award completion bonuses.
Progression Checkpoint Scoring
Each game piece has its own progression score, independent of other pieces. Your total progression score is all pieces combined.
A piece earns progression score when it first reaches or passes through an unscored checkpoint in its current checkpoint cycle.
The checkpoints are the piece’s own entering tile, each of the eight Castles, its midpoint, the other entering tiles, and its Home tile.
| Checkpoint | Journey Guard | Journey Noble | Brawl Guard | Brawl Noble |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Own entering tile | +10 | +20 | +5 | +10 |
| Each Castle | +20 | +40 | +10 | +20 |
| Other entering tile | +30 | +60 | +20 | +40 |
| Midpoint | +50 | +100 | +30 | +60 |
| Home | +100 | +200 | +50 | +100 |
Progression Checkpoint Cycles and Capture Loss
Each piece has its own checkpoint cycle, independent of your other pieces. A piece can earn progression score from each checkpoint only once per cycle.
When a piece reaches its midpoint while its midpoint progress is inactive, it earns the midpoint award, begins to glow, and starts a new checkpoint cycle. This resets its checkpoint records, allowing it to earn progression score from those checkpoints again.
Crossing the midpoint again while midpoint progress remains active does not award midpoint points or start another checkpoint cycle.
When a piece is captured, its progression score is reset to zero and its midpoint progress becomes inactive. However, its checkpoint records are not reset, so previously scored checkpoints cannot award points again until the piece reaches its midpoint and begins a new cycle.
Example: G2 leaves the Yard and passes the Castle on tile 8, earning progression score from both checkpoints. Moving backward or being captured does not allow G2 to score those checkpoints again. Once G2 reaches its midpoint and begins a new checkpoint cycle, it can earn its progression score again.
Pieces in Home are safe from capture, so any progression score they hold cannot be lost.
Combat Capture Scoring
The location of your Noble determines how many combat score points you earn for each opponent piece captured. Captured Nobles are worth more than captured Guards, and captures are worth more in Brawl than in Journey.
The more risk your Noble is taking, the more combat points your captures are worth. Safe spaces such as your Yard, entering tile, Home path, and Home award the fewest points, while regular tiles award more than Castles.
Once your Noble has passed its midpoint, captures become even more valuable. The highest combat score is awarded when your Noble is past its midpoint on a regular tile.
Example: In Brawl, your Noble is on a regular tile before its midpoint. You capture 1 Noble and 3 Guards, earning +150 for the Noble and +300 for the Guards, for a total of +450 combat score.
| Capturing Noble’s Location | Journey Guard | Journey Noble | Brawl Guard | Brawl Noble |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Safe space | +10 | +20 | +20 | +50 |
| Castle before midpoint | +20 | +30 | +50 | +100 |
| Regular tile before midpoint | +30 | +40 | +100 | +150 |
| Castle after midpoint | +40 | +50 | +150 | +200 |
| Regular tile after midpoint | +50 | +60 | +200 | +250 |
Blockade Score Penalties
When an opponent blockade prevents a piece from using all of its assigned movement, each trimmed movement step subtracts combat score from the moving player.
The penalty applies to Guards and Nobles. A player’s own Guards can stop that player’s Noble, but this causes no score penalty.
| Mode | Combat score per trimmed step |
|---|---|
| Journey | -5 |
| Brawl | -15 |
